About this lesson

Phishing is a type of cyber attack that involves tricking individuals into revealing sensitive information, such as passwords, credit card numbers, and other personal data, by masquerading as a trustworthy entity in digital communication. Typically conducted via email, phishing attacks can also occur through text messages (smishing), phone calls (vishing), or social media. The goal is to deceive the recipient into taking an action that compromises their security, such as clicking on a malicious link, downloading an infected attachment, or voluntarily providing confidential information.

Monthly checklist

Every month follow these tips to ensure you remain safe from Phising scams.

  • Treat emails, text messages, and phone calls with caution, especially if they request personal or financial information. Legitimate organizations usually do not ask for sensitive details via these channels.

  • If a message asks you to take urgent action, verify its authenticity by contacting the organization directly using contact information from their official website, not the contact details provided in the message.

  • Phishing attempts often have tell-tale signs such as poor spelling and grammar, generic greetings (e.g., "Dear Customer"), and mismatched URLs. Hover over any links to see if the actual URL matches what's displayed and whether it leads to a legitimate site.
