About this lesson

Bluetooth is a wireless technology standard used for exchanging data between fixed and mobile devices over short distances using UHF radio waves in the ISM bands, from 2.400 to 2.485 GHz. It was originally conceived as a wireless alternative to RS-232 data cables. Bluetooth enables the creation of personal area networks (PANs) with high levels of security. Bluetooth uses a radio technology called frequency-hopping spread spectrum, which divides the data being sent and transmits chunks of it on up to 79 bands (1 MHz each) in its range. This technique minimizes interference from other sources of radio frequency, ensuring a stable connection.

Monthly checklist

Every month follow these tips to ensure you are safe using Bluetooth.

  • Keeping Bluetooth active when it's not needed can expose your device to unnecessary risks. Turn off Bluetooth to save battery life and reduce the risk of unauthorized access.

  • When not pairing new devices, keep your Bluetooth settings in "Non-Discoverable" mode. This prevents your device from appearing in others' Bluetooth search lists, reducing the chance of unauthorized pairing attempts.

  • Listen for Beeps: Tracking tiles like AirTags emit a sound after being separated from their owner for a period. If you hear unexplained beeping sounds, investigate immediately.
