About this lesson

Apple Family Sharing is a feature that allows up to six family members to share iTunes, Apple Books, and App Store purchases, an Apple Music family plan, an Apple Arcade subscription, an Apple News+ subscription, Apple TV+ subscription, and an iCloud storage plan without sharing accounts. It also offers additional features to help families stay connected and manage their digital content and devices more efficiently. Apple Family Sharing is designed to foster connectivity and convenience for families deeply integrated into the Apple ecosystem. By centralizing subscriptions, purchases, and storage, while providing tools for parental oversight and family coordination, it significantly enhances the Apple device experience, offering both cost savings and peace of mind. It does come with dangers.

Monthly checklist

Every month follow these tips to ensure your Apple Family Sharing is safe and sharing what you intend it to.

  • Review which family members are sharing their locations and adjust settings if privacy concerns or circumstances have changed. Discuss location sharing preferences with family members to ensure everyone is comfortable with the current setup.

  • Verify that all family members in the group still need access. Remove any members who no longer require access or add new members as needed.

  • Even within a family, it’s important to maintain individual privacy. Encourage family members to use their own Apple IDs for personal communications, photos, and files.
