About this lesson

The Signal messaging app is a free and open-source software application for secure communication. It is widely recognized for its strong end-to-end encryption, which ensures that only the communicating users can read the messages. Signal is available for Android, iOS, and also has a desktop client for Windows, macOS, and Linux. Signal uses the state-of-the-art Signal Protocol to encrypt all forms of communication on the platform, including text messages, voice and video calls, group chats, and file transfers. This encryption ensures that no one besides the sender and the recipient, not even Signal, can access the content of the messages.

Monthly checklist

Every month follow these tips to ensure your Signal account is as safe as possible.

  • Signal Screen Lock: Enable Signal's built-in screen lock which requires a passcode or biometric authentication to access the app. You can set this up in Signal's privacy settings.

  • Turn on Registration Lock in Signal’s settings. This feature prevents someone from re-registering your phone number with Signal without a PIN if you’ve temporarily lost control of your SMS or phone number. This PIN adds an additional layer of security to prevent account takeovers.

  • In the Signal settings, disable message previews in notifications to prevent anyone else from glancing at your private messages when notifications pop up on your screen.
