About this lesson

MFA, or Multi-Factor Authentication, is a security system that requires more than one method of authentication from independent categories of credentials to verify the user's identity for a login or other transaction. The purpose of MFA is to create a layered defense, making it more difficult for an unauthorized person to access a target, such as a physical location, computing device, network, or database. If one factor is compromised or broken, an attacker still has at least one more barrier to breach before successfully accessing the target.

Monthly checklist

Every month follow these tips to ensure your protecting your privacy and using Multi-Factor Authentication as best as possible.

  • If you use an authenticator app for generating verification codes, regularly check for and install updates. App updates can include security patches, new features, or improvements in usability.

  • Regularly review the MFA methods associated with your accounts. Ensure that any physical devices (like security tokens or USB keys) are in good working condition and that app-based methods are installed on secure devices.

  • If your MFA includes biometric options (fingerprint, facial recognition), ensure your device's software is up to date to benefit from the latest security enhancements.
