About this lesson

Covert listening devices, commonly referred to as "bugs," are secretive surveillance tools used to record or transmit conversations without the knowledge of those being monitored. These devices are small and designed to be hidden in various locations, such as within everyday objects (like pens, clocks, smoke detectors) or discreetly placed in rooms, vehicles, and electronic devices. They range in complexity from simple radio frequency transmitters to sophisticated digital devices that can remotely transmit audio over cellular or internet connections.

Monthly checklist

Every month follow these tips to ensure you remain safe and free from covert surveillance such as Listening Devices.

  • Check Your Surroundings: Regularly inspect your home, office, and car for any unfamiliar objects or devices that seem out of place. Pay special attention to areas where confidential conversations occur.

  • Secure Your Communications: Encrypt Your Calls and Messages: Use encrypted communication apps for sensitive conversations. Encryption makes it difficult for someone to intercept and listen to your communications.

  • Examine Your Electronics: Sometimes, bugs are placed inside electronic devices. Check your phone lines, alarm clocks, radios, and televisions for any signs of tampering. Look for Physical Disturbances: Check for signs of disturbance, like dust or debris on the floor, which could indicate ceiling tiles or other compartments have been tampered with.
