About this lesson

Hidden cameras, also known as spy cameras or covert cameras, are small cameras designed to record people without their knowledge. The camera may be hidden from view or disguised as an ordinary object. Unlike standard surveillance cameras that are installed openly and visible to remind people that they are being monitored, hidden cameras are concealed or camouflaged to blend into their environment, making them nearly impossible to detect by those being recorded.

Monthly checklist

Every month follow these tips to ensure you remain safe and free from covert surveillance such as Hidden Cameras.

  • Use Network Scanning Apps: Use a network scanner app like Fing to identify devices connected to the Wi-Fi network in your location. Suspicious devices on the network could be hidden cameras. However, this method only works for cameras connected to the local network.

  • Look for IR LEDs: Many hidden cameras use infrared (IR) LEDs for night vision. You can spot these in a dark room because IR LEDs emit a faint glow. Use the camera on your smartphone to scan the room; most smartphone cameras can see IR light even if it's invisible to the naked eye.

  • Use a Flashlight: In a darkened room, use a flashlight or your phone’s flashlight to scan for camera lenses. Camera lenses are designed to be reflective, so they might catch the light and give themselves away as a tiny, bright reflection.
